Daylight Savings Ends Along with Some Home Maintenance Projects

by Loreena Yeo on November 5, 2011

You probably have been getting lots of email and social media reminders that SUNDAY 11/6/2011 is the end of Daylight Savings time, which means we get FALL BACK and as a BONUS, we receive an extra hour of sleep.

However, if you are an over-achiever like me, you might want to work on some or all of these home maintenance projects tomorrow:

  • Change out the batteries in your smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors
  • Change out the air filters in your home
  • Trim your bushes/ landscaping after a vigorous Summer growing season
  • Clean out your fireplace/ chimney to get ready for Winter
  • Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans
  • Add pre-emergent to your lawn to prevent weeds in the Spring
  • Remove solar screens to let more light into the house
  • Walk around the foundation of your home to check soil conditions
  • Clean out gutters and check for loose ones
  • Clean out roof debris from falling leaves

I know, doing these home improvement/ maintenance projects may take you more than the extra hour you gain. Pick and choose the ones you haven’t done in a while.

Most importantly, dont forget to set your clocks one hour behind before heading to bed.

Interesting point about reversing the ceiling fans. Any particular reason? The fan blades are typically set to only work one direction.

The ceiling fans have forward and reverse directions. The forward direction sends the breeze downward. During the summer months you want to feel the breeze when you are under the fan. However, in the winter months the reverse direction will pull the cold air up and the warm air down while circulating the room. Warm air rises up so if you have a tall ceiling room, you may feel cold air closer to the floor and warmer air higher. Hopefully, this will mix the air without blowing directly on to you.
